TAKE TEXAS BACK!
A bunch of thieves, thugs, and nutcases took over Texas. Then they used it as a stepping stone to Washington, DC.

They raided our treasury, stripped our schools and handed it all to their corporate cronies.

Updated: Texas Orders All Girls To Get HPV Vaccine

by: krazypuppy

Fri Feb 02, 2007 at 15:51:19 PM CST

Wow! Texas just became the first state to order all its school-aged girls to get the controversial HPV vaccine. Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is a common cause of STDs and can lead to cervical cancer and other gynecological cancers.
Bypassing the Legislature, Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.
But why is it controversial? It's not except that some conservative groups believe girls with the vaccine will have more sex. That's right. These groups would rather expose young girls to HPV-related cancers than give them a vaccine that could save their lives.

So did Perry, who plays often to his anti-abortionist and religiously extreme base, suddenly grow some brains and a heart? Nope. Perry reasons for signing this executive order had nothing to his concern for "the safety and welfare of our children." The reason - the only reason - is that Merck, the maker of the vaccine, gave Perry alot of money and lobbied him hard.
Perry has several ties to Merck and Women in Government. One of the drug company's three lobbyists in Texas is Mike Toomey, Perry's former chief of staff. Perry also received $6,000 from Merck's political action committee during his re-election campaign.
Merck better get Perry a job too while they're at it, because once his base realizes they were sold out and Perry, like Tom Delay, has just been using these religious "wackos", Rick may need a new job.

And just in case, you needed a reminder that it wasn't his heart that changed but his bank account, here's a photo of Rick Perry at another signing. It was at a church, where he signed an Anti-abortion bill. It was at the same signing that he told gays to find some other state to live in.

So, it wasn't safety or intelligence that won. It was money. However, at least this time, young women and girls of Texas won't be losing to the political pressure of the religious reicht and the politicians who kiss up to them.

krazypuppy :: Updated: Texas Orders All Girls To Get HPV Vaccine
Update: If you look at the DKos version of this diary, you'll see many comments raising concerns over this vaccine.

One issue people was the idea that the state could force vaccines on people. The second was the safety of the issue which TxSharon raises below.

The safety of the HPV Vaccine should definitely be checked - after all Merck is the same company that gave us the dangerous Vioxx drug.

However, the hostility to vaccines by the state was surprising to me.

I should've included the fact that parents can opt-out of this vaccine, but I had to run earlier:

Texas allows parents to opt out of inoculations by filing an affidavit objecting to the vaccine on religious or philosophical reasons. Even with such provisions, however, conservative groups say such requirements interfere with parents' rights to make medical decisions for their children.

Hopefully that will calm the numerous people who felt like the State was forcing themselves on their child.

That said, I must say I'm surprised by the number of posts against vaccinations. To some degree I understand it (Merck/Perry aren't exactly trustworthy), but I also wonder if there is a level of paranoia out there.

A somewhat understandable paranoia - but nonetheless paranoia. And a willingness to stubbornly fight for your right to say no in the face of medically sound advice.

For a thorough discussion of HPV, look to TheSilence's diary here. It also contains good comments from TxSharon on concerns re: the safety of vaccine.

But let me say that I admire the your willness to question everything & think it can be healthy. I myself do not agree with for instance the flu vaccine.

However, that doesn't mean all vaccines are wrong. I think we should look at this more positively in terms of women's health & less suspiciously (esp w/ opt out clause).

Can Merck be trusted? No. Vioxx proved that. Can Perry be? Hell NO!

But not all vaccines are bad & the research does indicate a sound basis for proposing it.

That said, the bottomline is that it should be available should one want to take it - and conservative groups want to take that choice away from you.

This law still gives you that choice - & still have a sound medically approved base.

Good for Gov. Perry (0.00 / 0)
that was the right and courageous(in TX) move no matter what the motives were. The arguments that this promotes promiscuity are just ridiculous. Perry blows off his immigration promises to his base then this. The people that voted for him must be getting really mad, good.

i'm not giving him any credit (4.00 / 1)
he did this for money which makes me less respectable. no principles.

but that's what they voted for!

I have to read this twice (0.00 / 0)
I thought it was snark until I realized it was all about the money.  Again.  Whatever, at least the girls will get the shots.

If it is about money.... (4.00 / 1)
than Rick Perry is a cheap date.

The cost of the vaccine is $360 for the 3 shot series multiply this by the number of 6th grade girls in TX and divide by $6000.  A large profit for Merck for a very small cost.

All in all it seems like a good thing.  Given the choice, I will take corporate corruption over religious conviction any day of the week.

Costs (0.00 / 0)
Most insurance plans cover vaccinations for anyone under the age of 18.  But what about all the kids who don't have health insurance?  I know they are out there, I didnt have health insurance until I was 24.

Who covers the mandatory vaccines for kids with out health insurance now?  An extra $360 expense for a parent with a daughter starting junior high is A LOT of money.  I hope this is worked out already.

Good for Rick Perry.  Yeah, it's about money, but at least girls in Texas will get the vaccine.

How about good for the young women (4.00 / 3)
And let's give credit to Perry for knowing when to pander.  I was shocked myself.  I don't consider it a risk for Perry.  He's not going to run for Governor again.  He wants national attention and he just got it - big time.

Exactly what I was thinking (4.00 / 2)
He's looking to tart himself up to look like a moderate.

Which means we in Texas may get some bones thrown at us, but never, NEVER forget who this man really is.

That's the even more important part of KP's diary. He's still a hatemongerer and religious bigot.

The whole mandatory (0.00 / 0)
part of this is something to which I object.  I think it's great that a vaccination is available but I don't think it should be mandatory.

I wouldn't have my daughter vaccinated until I found out exactly what is in the vaccine and what the possible side effects are.  You can have a yearly pap smear and that will help prevent cancer but you can't reverse brain damage from some of the shit they put in vaccinations.

it's not mandatory (0.00 / 0)
there is a provision in this executive order that allows parents to opt out for religious reasons.

what will be interesting to see, about 30 years down the road, is whether the statistics will show that children who's parents opt out have a higher instance of cervical cancer than the children who were vaccinated.

People can opt out but (0.00 / 0)
how many parents will know that?

I do not object to vaccines.  In fact, I think, for the most part, they are wonderful.

I think the interesting studies 30 years down the road will be how many children whose parents rushed to be the first one to get a very new vaccination offered by a for profit company have serious complication because of that vaccine.

As things stand, pap smears can go a long way in preventing the 1% of deaths caused by cervical cancer.  But you cannot reverse brain damage or other damage from a vaccine that contains substance that are harmful.

Press Release

There is too little long term safety and efficacy data, especially in young girls, and too little labeling information on contraindications for the CDC to recommend Gardasil for universal use, which is a signal for states to mandate it," said Fisher. "Nobody at Merck, the CDC or FDA know if the injection of Gardasil into all pre-teen girls - especially simultaneously with hepatitis B vaccine - will make some of them more likely to develop arthritis or other inflammatory autoimmune and brain disorders as teenagers and adults. With cervical cancer causing about one percent of all cancer deaths in American women due to routine pap screening, it was inappropriate for the FDA to fast track Gardasil. It is way too early to direct all young girls to get three doses of a vaccine that has not been proven safe or effective in their age group."

It does contain aluminum, as I posted down thread.

Just saying, I'm slow to jump on the bus when the bus has been proven repeatedly to be a clunker.  I would not be the first one to rush out and get my daughter this vaccination.  BTDT wearing the t-shirt.

they will know (0.00 / 0)
there's paperwork and stuff to go along with it, and parents have to be informed of the opt out when they go to get their girls vaccinated.

i don't disagree with what you're saying, but personally, i want to see women get this vaccine.

They will know about the opt out (0.00 / 0)
HOWEVER (and I want to be very clear here) they will not be told about the MANY (see link I provided) horrible complications that can damage their children for LIFE.

Let me be very clear:  I am not opposed to vaccinations!  But, this vaccination IS NOT SAFE!  Yet.  When they can prove that it is safe, then HELL YEAH!

Read the information at the link.

Remember how they claimed that the Mercury in DPT vaccinations did not cause autism but then Phil Gramm passed legislation so that parents could never collect damages just in case they later determined that the Mercury actually did contribute?

I'm just saying:  Don't jump out of the frying pan into the fire!

There are MANY problems with this vaccination.

Perry is the scum of the earth (4.00 / 1)
Perry did this for cash and cash only.  Mandatory vaccines that are long established I can understand.  I have to wonder how well the testing was done on this vacine or if cash smoother the process as it did with Perru's executive order.  There have been way too many cases in teh past 20 years where a drug has been approved in the United States only to prove deadly with in a few months of wide spread use.  I am truely hoping the FDA did it's job this time and we do not see a repeat of their past mistakes.

Doing My Part For The Left,

My son was harmed by a (4.00 / 1)
mandatory, long established vaccination that contained mercury and aluminum as most long established vaccinations did and some still do.

Gardasil contains 225 mcg of aluminum and, although aluminum adjuvants have been used in vaccines for decades, they were never tested for safety in clinical trials. Merck and the FDA did not disclose how much aluminum was in the placebo.[2]

I guess I am just leary (0.00 / 0)
of this one especially as there are so many cases of drugs being approved only to be recalled later and I do not see how they can recall a vaccine someone has already recieved.  I think more studies need to be done on the vaccines that are out there and improve them instead of just sticking with the status quo.  I had no problem with any of the mandatory vaccines and have actually had them twice as they lost my recods and I had to have proof when I went to college. LOL

Perry Panders to Merck (0.00 / 0)
This is all about the money.  Nothing more, nothing less.  Merck donated $6000. to Perry's re-election campaign and now it's pay back time for Perry.  Merck stands to make billions if the vaccine is mandatory and Perry and the Republican Party will benefit from t his.  Go to topsecrets.org to see how much pharma companies donate to the Republican Party.

The right wing and middle of the road conservatives are duking it out over this issue on the Dallas blog, under "social conservatives critical of Perry's vaccine orders."  The Conservatives smell the huge money rat in the room.  Maybe it will finally dawn on conservatives in this state that the Republican Party merely uses them as tools to get voted into office.

If Perry really cared about our state's children, why, in a state that has the second highest number of public schools, nationwide, do we rank 40th in expenditures per student.  We rank 47 in SAT scores and 35 in high school graduation rates.  We rank 50 in the percentage of people twenty-five and older with high school diplomas.

The shameful information above was published in the Bryan-College State Eagle yesterday.

If anyone would like to see who contributed to Perry's inauguration, check out the link to the  Texas Observer below.  We'll see who is next in line for payback.

http://www.texasobse...

If the vaccine is a good thing for girls, I hope it is available to them, but not until it is completely tested and vetted.  For all we know, the FDA has been outsourced to Halliburton.
