They raided our treasury, stripped our schools and handed it all to their corporate cronies.

Republican Negligence Wastes 3,000 Jobs in Texas

by: Libby Shaw

Sun Feb 14, 2010 at 13:26:25 PM CST

Sadly, there is very bad news for a city that is located west of the Houston area. Sealy recently lost an Army contract that will result in 3,000 lost jobs. This is devastating for a small city in which the Army contractor, BAE Systems, is a major employer.

In late November and early December several progressive bloggers, including me revealed just how Texas fell victim to an impending and significant job loss thanks to do nothing, self-serving Texas lawmakers who are too busy palling around with fat cat sugar daddy donors to have given a rat's derriere about their lowly constituents.

Apparently our Texas politician lawmakers, including Governor Rick Perry, Sealy's U.S. House Representative Michael McCaul and U.S. Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn failed to notice that:

A long term Army contract was up for bid in 2009.

There are so many questions to ask.

Did the powers that be at BAE submit a renewal bid to retain the contract or did the company rely on its go to boys and girls in Washington to make it happen?

How come the Texas lawmakers in Austin and in  Washington D.C. failed to notice that 3,000 jobs were about to be lost? What were they thinking? Were they thinking about Texas at all?

As Phillip Martin over at The Burnt Orange Report (cited above) reports:

Today, McCaul is blaming Washington and the Obama administration. However, there was no effective effort to save it by McCaul, Senator Hutchison, or Governor Rick Perry. It was not until after the contract was announced that any of the state's Republican elected officials began to work on saving the contract -- something they have now failed to do, and are now quickly trying to point fingers at President Obama to avoid accepting the responsibility of their failures.

John Cornyn's threat to block the confirmation of a top Army acquisition official is not only too little and too late, but the American people are fed up with the never ending Republican blocks and obstruction that are paralyzing our federal government. Go ahead Senator, block the acquisition guy and show us how much you support our troops and the two wars that you voted for.

BAE and Texas politicians should have known, given today's economy and the devastation in the Midwestern region of the country, considering the number of closed factories, the contract renewal in Sealy would have been almost a literal battle to the death.  Either all involved did not have the fortitude for such a fight.  Or perhaps all grew too arrogant and complacent after decades of a Republican majority in both Texas and in the U.S. Congress.

How Texas Lost 10,000 Jobs

by: Libby Shaw

Thu Dec 10, 2009 at 15:05:48 PM CST

A couple of weeks ago I posted a piece about BAE Systems in Sealy and its recently lost federal contract.  I had reported on an article that had been written in the Houston Chronicle about this issue.

The Pentagon's decision to shift the production of Army trucks from Texas to Wisconsin after 17 years caught Texas' elected officials by surprise, raising questions about overconfidence, a loss of political clout and the impact of economic incentives provided to the winning company by Wisconsin's Democratic governor.

Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry and the 34-member Senate-House delegation are rallying to salvage a deal for BAE Systems that could be worth $2.6 billion and sustain 10,000 direct and indirect jobs around the sprawling truck manufacturing plant in Sealy.

Houston's Channel 13 News recently reported on the grim outcome for Sealy as well.

PDiddie over at Brains and Eggs had also written about the Sealy situation on November 27.

McCaul failed to enlist Democrats in Texas' congressional delegation such as Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, to help protect the contract in a Democratic administration, says Matt Angle, a longtime Democratic operative who heads the political action committee known as the Lone Star Project.

On Tuesday, Phillip Martin over at The Burnt Orange Report wrote that Rep. Michael McCaul (TX-10) had fumbled away over 3,000 jobs in his district.  The Lone Star Project revealed that indeed, McCaul had failed to advocate on behalf of BAE Systems and the folks in Sealy.

An official letter from the Department of Defense obtained by the Lone Star Project states that no record exists of Michael McCaul contacting the Department of Defense during the contract review process to advocate for BAE systems or to request fair consideration that the contract be renewed. (Source: DOD Freedom of Information Act Request, 10/14/2009 ) Additional research shows that McCaul also failed to take other basic steps Members of Congress normally take when trying to win support from their colleagues to protect District jobs.

McCaul, of course, will take no responsibility for his failure to act on behalf of BAE Systems.

The Chronicle had also disclosed that Governor Rick Perry, U.S. House Rep. Michael McCaul and top aides for Senators Cornyn and Hutchison said they felt sucker punched and blind sided by Sealy's lost federal contract.

One congressional aide said Texas lawmakers should have been more alert to the possibility of losing a contract that Oshkosh had tried to win in 2001. "It just wasn't on anybody's radar," the aide said.

Sucker punched and blind sided?!

Wait a minute.  These lawmakers who had completely forgotten about the serious and potential job loss in their state felt sucker punched and blind sided?  Please.

If anyone has been sucker punched and blind sided it is the employees of BAE System and the folks in Sealy who will know a new world of hurt if the plant closes.

As an administrator for a scientific laboratory at an academic institution that is awarded a great number of federal grants, I can tell you that if BAE System's executives, Rick Perry, Michael McCaul, John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison forgot about the potential for a 10,000 job loss in Texas, all are grossly and hopelessly negligent.

Texas GOP Hall of Hypocrites

by: Libby Shaw

Wed Oct 21, 2009 at 20:20:54 PM CDT

According to the DCCC there are 67 House Republicans  who voted against the stimulus package.  But when these no voters are back in their home states they like to brag and swagger about bringing home the bacon.    On a different level, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison joins these ranks.  She voted against the stimulus bill and yet she criticized Rick Perry for turning down federal funding for extended unemployment benefits.

Texas has its fair share of outstanding hypocrites.  Check the list below to see if your U.S. House Rep. is included in the GOP Hall of Hypocrites.  I am not shocked to admit that my Rep. is among them.  I betcha your's are too.

As Usual, Republiduds Lack the Courage of Their Convictions on Iraq

by: boadicea

Thu May 15, 2008 at 18:38:47 PM CDT

The House voted on funding the Iraq supplemental.

The Dem caucus was split between those who voted for it, and those who refused to continue funding the Iraq invasion and occupation.

You might guess that gleeful House Republicans jumped to vote with the first group to split the Dem caucus, right?

Wrong.

These brave chickenhawks are so wedded to their obstructionist agenda, they all chose to vote "present". Meaning, we're here, but we won't vote for or against this measure, which allowed it to die on the floor of Congress.

So, when you see the ad telling you Dems are going to strand our troops in Iraq without support, remember these names Texas.

TX-10: Grant Calls on Opponent to Put Texas Taxpayers First, Clear Channel Last

by: DanGrant

Wed Oct 31, 2007 at 10:00:56 AM CDT

(Trick or Treat, Congressman Clear Channel? - promoted by sccs)

The Federal Communications Commission is moving ahead with plans to help big media get bigger.  A rally happening right now in front of FCC headquarters in Washington, D.C., is designed to slow the rush toward even more consolidation.

My opponent should break his silence on this important issue and explain whether he is working for the Texas taxpayers who own the public airwaves or Clear Channel, his family's mega-media company.

Call McCaul at 202-225-2401 and remind him who owns the public airwaves.

Dan Grant: 'SCHIP Fight Not Over Yet'

by: DanGrant

Tue Oct 23, 2007 at 09:36:45 AM CDT

( - promoted by boadicea)

It's World Series week, and Congressman Mike McCaul is about to get another chance to improve his batting average when a measure providing uninsured Texas kids the kind of health insurance program he enjoys comes up again for debate.

So far, he's batting 0-2.

First, he voted against the bi-partisan SCHIP bill that would have extended coverage to nearly 1.4 million Texas children whose parents work hard and earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but too little to afford private insurance.  Then, he remained in lockstep with the Bush-Cheney administration and voted against overriding the President's veto.

Forty-four Republicans joined the Democratic majority in voting to override last week and guarantee access to affordable health care for the children of parents who are working hard and playing by the rules.  They ignored the misinformation spread by the White House and did the right thing.

Dan Grant: 'McCaul Votes For Big Insurance First, Texas Families Last'

by: DanGrant

Thu Oct 18, 2007 at 16:01:03 PM CDT

My opponent once more failed to do the right thing today.

He again put his loyalty to the Bush-Cheney administration ahead of his obligation to the families who pay for his own health care with their taxes but can't afford the same rights for their own children.

Central Texans were looking for more leadership and less followership in Washington, D.C. today, because with more uninsured children than any other state, we had more to lose. We didn't get that leadership today.

It's time for a fresh start in a new direction.

Dan Grant (TX-10): 'Call McCaul'

by: DanGrant

Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 15:07:05 PM CDT

The U.S. House Thursday is scheduled to vote on whether to override the President's controversial veto of the bi-partisan State Children's Health Insurance Program.  Rep. Mike McCaul should vote to provide more than 1.4 million uninsured Texas children the health care they need.

Unfortunately, McCaul voted against uninsured kids and for insurance industry special interests the first round.  Will he find the moral courage to do the right thing today?  Will he finally make Texas priorities his priorities?

Does Mike McCaul Agree With His Brother-in-Law?

by: DanGrant

Wed Oct 03, 2007 at 14:18:34 PM CDT

The junior Congressman From Clear Channel has been notably silent during the uproar over rightwing talk show host Rush Limbaugh's attack on U.S. troops who oppose the White House's misadventure in Iraq as "phony soldiers."

Now Rep. McCaul's brother-in-law, the CEO of the company that broadcast Limbaugh's diatribe, is defending the indefensible.

McCaul Should Move On

by: DanGrant

Wed Sep 26, 2007 at 15:56:13 PM CDT

(Move On, and Move OUT of DC, Mr. Clear Channel. - promoted by sccs)

One day after voting against extending the same kind of taxpayer-funded health care he himself enjoys to more than four million eligible American children who have no insurance at all, Mike McCaul has found a cause he can support -- condemning the free expression of opinion by a group of citizens during an important national debate.

Will Mike McCaul Condemn Scooter's Amnesty?

by: DanGrant

Tue Jul 03, 2007 at 10:48:28 AM CDT

(Do something about it - elect an honest rep - promoted by krazypuppy)

The commutation of Scooter Libby's prison sentence wasn't really a surprise. We already knew the President believed in amnesty.

But the silence from our Congressman is troubling. Mike McCaul fancies himself an authority on national security and is a member of the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct.

Poll about Michael McCaul

by: BeckyH

Mon Jun 25, 2007 at 18:00:00 PM CDT

(we need to discuss our elected officials and hold them accountable - promoted by refinish69)

So, I've been talking to a friend about our congressman, Michael McCaul, and we were comparing our level of service as constituents. I sent Mr. McCaul an e-mail from his own website a week & a half ago (they've had it for 8 working days, by my count), about a legitimate constituent concern (funding cuts for the National Library Service for the Blind). Completely non-political. Well, as non-political as funding for a federal program can be.

I have had no response whatsoever from my congressman. Nada, nothing, crickets chirping. Yes my e-mail address is somewhat partisan (anotherdemocrat), but I'm still his constituent & I deserve a response to my concerns. When Jake Pickle was my representative & I was involved in the University Democrats, we had some very intense discussions about whether or not we should endorse someone so conservative. I'm sure that the congressman &/or his aides were fully aware of what was said in those meetings. I still would have had a written response by now if I had contacted him with similar concerns. And if he was going to fix this problem, it would be on the way to being fixed.

I'm Running to Reclaim the Seat Tom DeLay Stole From LBJ

by: DanGrant

Thu Jun 07, 2007 at 08:09:16 AM CDT

(I can't help it-I just love this title... Go, DAN!!!! - promoted by boadicea)

When I was a 17-year-old high school student in Austin, I volunteered for Congressman Jake Pickle, the legendary Texas Congressman who held the CD-10 seat for 31 years, from 1963 until he retired in 1994. Back then CD-10 was known as "LBJ's District" because a young Lyndon Johnson had held it. LBJ used the seat to lead implementation of FDR's New Deal, and his efforts brought electricity to central Texas.

Congressman Pickle was a worthy heir to the LBJ legacy. His work to reorganize Social Security has kept the program solvent and functioning into the present. He also brought a great deal of research and technology investment to the area, and was a strong and effective advocate for higher education and the University of Texas.

Now I’m running for that seat myself. And though the district has changed dramatically (thanks to Tom DeLay and his partisan allies), the promise of public service I learned in Congressman Pickle's office still holds true today: honor the past and imagine the future.

Dan Grant, Candidate For TX 10: 'Why I'm A Democrat'

by: DanGrant

Thu May 24, 2007 at 10:34:19 AM CDT

(Dan has some good things to say and I think we need more Democrats like him. - promoted by refinish69)

I'm running for U.S. Congress in the Texas 10th. Why?

Because my district was gerrymandered by Tom DeLay and Karl Rove, and our current representative does not reflect the mainstream values of Houston, Austin, and all the places in between.

Iraq.  Katrina.  Abu Ghraib.  Walter Reed and Guantánamo, Osama Bin Laden at large.  Big Pharma writing Medicare plans while Texas seniors lose prescription drug coverage.  Big Insurance writing campaign checks while Texans pay twice the national average to insure their homes.  Soaring deficits, a demoralized foreign policy - and a capital city so tied up in partisan knots that they have no idea how to get us back on the right track.

We need a change in Washington.  Now.

This isn't a rebuilding year in Texas. It's a battleground year.

A few of Ted's numbers on the flip.
