On this Independence Friday, let's see what's hawtt in historical podcasting.
First of all, there's the Thomas Jefferson Hour, broadcast on radio stations all over the nation, and podcast for on demand listening.
During the first part of the hour, humanities scholar Clay S. Jenkinson, author of many books, including Becoming Jefferson's People, portrays the third President and author of the Declaration of Independence answering impromptu questions of historical and sociopolitical significance.
The second half of the hour is devoted to an out of character meta-discussion between Jenkinson and "permanent guest host" David Swenson.
Without fail, this hour is a thoughtful and occasionally provocative look at our Jeffersonian heritage, and how modern America measures up to Thomas Jefferson's dream.

You can hear him talk about the e coli evolution that has conservapedia hysteria reaching such a fever pitch on one of my favorite science podcasts, The Naked Scientists.
Dr. Lenski mentioned one of his reasons for addressing Schlafly head on was his mission as an educator, and in the interview his ability to explain evolution for a lay audience-including children-is certainly a strong characteristic.
Listen with your little scientists, or listen for the pure joy of hearing the phrase "evolved bacteria kick butt".
We may not have a sequel to Serenity (yet), but in honor of the fundraising campaign, Can't Stop the Serenity celebrating one of my favorite writers, Joss Whedon, to the benefit of Equality Now, this week, we'll finish up our look at the Whedonverse in podcasting.
Be sure to check out the dates of CStS in your area, thanks to BeckyH
What would you do if you loved a show so much that even after seven years, you wanted more story.
You might follow Buffy Season 8 courtesy of Dark Horse Comics, but if you really, REALLY want more story-you'll make up your own. Fanfic is as old as Spock's sexy ear points.
Podcasting has opened up a whole new vista for fanficcers-they can write, cast, and produce their own audio (or video) dramas to fill in the gaps in the story.
I'm early in the episodes, so I don't know how well it will wear ultimately, but they're off to a pretty good start, and they work their asses off to tell stories in the Buffyverse that hang together with what's already known.
In honor of the fundraising campaign, Can't Stop the Serenity celebrating one of my favorite writers, Joss Whedon, to the benefit of Equality Now, this week, we'll be talking about those who talk about all things Joss.

My first discovery and still favorite has to be The Signal. Intelligent and rollicking fun, it includes features like The Big Damn Test Kitchen, recreating dishes seen in Firefly or Serenity, news and reviews, and a little slice of fan fic in a segment called Badger's World that rarely fails to crack me up.
Growing up in AZ meant a lot of nights with clear skies for stargazing, and a vital astronomy community anchored by the University of AZ.
So I have a fondness for astronomy buffs who've picked up the podcast microphone to enlighten, educate, and share the amazement of what we find when we turn our gaze out into the stars.
Astronomy Cast: Fraser Cain, publisher of Universe Today, and astronomer Dr. Pamela L. Gay, of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, have a great rapport in this fun and informative podcast suitable for astronomers from middle school to mid life.
For video podcasts, one of my favorites is The Beautiful Universe images from the Chandra X-Ray telescope.
Between that and the NASA/JPL video podcasts, you may feel like your swimming through the stars like some exotic space creature.
Remember the anti-nausea meds if you're prone to motion sickness...
Happy Friday. Consider this an open thread. What are you listening to or watching?
Introducing a new weekly feature to close out the week here on Texas Kaos.
I listen to a lot of podcasts. I think it's fair to say I'm a wee bit addicted to them in fact, so I'm particularly pleased that refinish69 has begun doing our TK podcasts again. I hope you'll listen and enjoy.
But there's a whole lot more going on in Podlandia, whether your interests are musical, political, historical, or goofy fancasts.
